I was fortunate enough to be at Cowboys in Calgary two years ago as they counted down to Canada Day. At midnight the entire bar busted into Oh Canada. Pretty cool.

Outstanding talent in the room as well.

In honor of Canada Day, I brought out my tape of the last game at Maple Leaf Gardens and came up with two trivia questions:

Who scored the last NHL goal in MLG?

Who was the last Maple Leaf to play on the ice that night?

Pretty sure the answer to the first question is Bob Probert.

I don't even know what the second question means.

So I guess you won't be lining up to see the new documentary a la No Direction Home on Leonard?

Simple one: Who was the last Toronto Maple Leaf to play on the Gardens' ice that night?

    Define "Play."

Do you mean the last Leaf to actually have his skates on the ice? The last Leaf to touch the puck? Or is this a trick question that includes the lame post-game ceremony.

I'm not being deliberately dense, I just don't know what you mean.

I believe the answer to the first question is Doug Gilmour ... as a Chicago Blackhawk.

Oh my I was wrong. It was Bob Probert. Have no idea who last guy off the ice was, though.

"Suzanne". What more can I say.

Also, "Closing Time" is one of my all time favourite songs:

    And my very close companion
gets me fumbling gets me laughing
    she's a hundred but she's wearing
    something tight

    Perfect Cohen lyrics.

Did I read correctly that in the second edition of Canadian Idol, all the Idol-ers sang "Canadian Railroad Trilogy" with Gordon Lightfoot in attendance?

And now, Stompin' Tom Connors, Canada's greatest Canada chauvinist, brings us a little tune:

It's Canada Day up Canada Way on the first day of July.
And we're shouting hooray up Canada Way when the maple leaf flies high.
Where the silver jets from East to West are streaming through our skies.
We'll be shouting hooray up Canada Way when the great parade goes by.

    Chorus:
    Oh Canada, standing tall together,
We'll raise our hands and hail our flag
    The maple leaf forever.

It's Canada Day up Canada Way on the coast of Labrador.
And we're shouting hooray up Canada Way on the white Pacific shore.
People everywhere have a song to share on Canada's holiday.
From P. E. Island to the sunny south to the North Pole far away.
    Chorus...

It's Canada Day up Canada Way on the long cold winters done.
And we're shouting hooray up Canada Way for the great days yet to come.
Where maple trees grow maple leaves when the Northern sun is high.
We're Canadians and we're born again on the first day of July.
    Chorus...

It's Canada Day up Canada Way from the lakes to the prairies wide.
And we're shouting hooray up Canada Way on the St. Lawrence river side.
People everywhere have a song to share on Canada's holiday.
From P. E. Island to the sunny south to the North Pole far away.
    Chorus...

Happy Canada Day, everybody! Might as well go for soda.
