Love him or hate him (and I think if you love college football, you have to love him), I think it's pretty cool that Beano Cook turns 80 on the first day of the college football season (Thursday).

ESPN sent out this press release today, which includes some of Beano's best one-liners:

Long live The Bard of Pittsburgh!

  4. Hope there's no truth to the rumor that he plans to release a sex tape on his birthday

His outtakes are some of the funniest video I've ever seen.

That ESPN release wrapped up with Beano's greatest quote. My other all-time favorite Beano line takes a while to set up:

One summer day shortly before training camp opened while he was SID at Pitt, Beano answers his office phone. The female caller asks for a copy of the Panthers football roster.
"Sure," Beano says. "What's your name, affiliation, address?"
    "My affiiliation?"
"Yeah, you know, your newspaper, magazine or ... "
"Oh, I'm not a reporter or anything like that."
"But," answers Beano, "we don't usually give rosters out to the general public. Why would you want one?"
"Well, you see, I've already had all the available pro athletes in town. It's time to (screw) my way through the college jocks."
"I see," says Beano. "You seem to be an enterprising young lady; I'm going to send you a roster. But, you know, delivery of U.S. Mail being as slow as it is these days, why don't I give you the first four or five players' names right now over the phone?"
    "Oh, that'd be great!"
"OK, then, got a pen? Here we go:
    "No. 55, Cook, Beano, guard, 5-10, 230 ..."
