I thought Haiti was all fixed. They have kind of dropped out of the news.

Well, that big celebrity telethon for Chilean Earthquake Relief ate up a lot of the news cycle.

  3. there is good reason for it. yes, it's (somewhat of) a pr stunt. but it's also not a military mission, it's a humanitarian one. i don't recall flying the flag in bandeh aceh or on other humanitarian relief missions. there also are extra sensitivities here given the history of u.s. occupation and ham-handedness.

They're not the Peace Corp or the Boy Scouts. They're Soldiers, Marines, and Airmen and they deserve to be able to fly our flag on their bases.

They deserve to at least as much as the French or any other nation.

Good grief. Some of you people really need a life.

Anything to bash Obama, eh? Read the story. Apparently, the decision was a thoughtful one. But of course, that doesn't matter when there are cheap political points to be made.

    This can't be good:

@jaketapper: reports from Haiti indicate that Baby Doc Duvalier has returned. serious

@jaketapper: Baby Doc ruled Haiti from 1971 to 1986, fled, and has been living in exile in France for almost 25 yrs. this is astonishing.

From a voice whose mother was driven from Haiti and had ancestors killed by the Duvalier regime:

    Haïti, mon pays,
    wounded mother I'll never see.
    Ma famille set me free.
Throw my ashes into the sea.

    Mes cousins jamais nés
    hantent les nuits de Duvalier.
    Rien n'arrete nos esprits.
Guns can't kill what soldiers can't see.

In the forest we lie hiding,
    unmarked graves where flowers grow.
    Hear the soldiers angry yelling,
in the river we will go.

Tous les morts-nés forment une armée,
soon we will reclaim the earth.
All the tears and all the bodies
    bring about our second birth.

    Haïti, never free,
n'ai pas peur de sonner l'alarme.
    Tes enfants sont partis,
In those days their blood was still warm

    Arcade Fire, "Haiti"

Ten years after the Big One, Haiti gets hit with another.
And this is just a few weeks after their president was assassinated in his home and as a tropical storm is heading for the island.

7.2 magnitude earthquake hits Haiti; at least 29 killed
