I can't understand why anyone who cared enough to tune into "ER" would have tuned out after a half-hour this time.

I agree - Grey's was pretty bad after a really solid Season 2.

Knowing how Mere feels about McDreamy, why would McVet even be in play? They've set it up as a contest, and that's weak.

Addison's probably my favorite, so it'll be interesting to see what she does. If the writers were true to her character, they'd move back to her practice in NY. It wouldn't be like Addison to hang around and wallow in the aftermath of a breakup. But if they did that, one of their strongest actors would be off the show, and that wouldn't do, would it?

I think this show needs a few relatively mundane surgeries -- and just let it "calm down" for awhile.

Really? I found that situation to be totally contrived. Miranda is always the doctor who is totally level-headed and who doesn't freak out and get emotional (except for when she was having a baby and her husband was dying), but that scene seemed to be asking me to care deeply about a character I'd never even seen before this episode, which felt cheap. Yes, it was awful that the man's wife died of The Plague, but for Miranda to just break down like that felt totally contrived. To be honest, I felt like saying, Are you telling me Miranda cares this much because, um, the guy is black? It just didn't feel like it was earned at all.

I like this show (though not one tenth as much as my wife does, so I understand Clubber's plight) but it tries to hard for that emotional weepy payoff scene every three episodes. I feel manipulated. That's why when IJAG called it emotional porn in a conversation we once had, I think she nailed it. It's like emotional manipulation just for emotional manipulation's sake, just like porn is sex just for the sake of sex.

At least it used to be good emotional porn. They've gone from Jenna Jameson to Misty Crystal.

Totally with you on the Bailey storyline, DD. I need her to be the woman who delivered the line, "YOU. FOOLS. BETTER HAVE A GOOD EXPLANATION FOR THIS."

Are they trying too hard to appease the actors by giving them each a life-altering drama?? That way they'll be happy and won't ask for more $$ in their next contract negotiation??

Yeah, last year's season finale was one of the best ERs of recent years. Liked the opener. I'm a big Abby/Luka fan, so I'm rooting for them to pull through.

i thought the er opener was shite... just too much

can't we have a day in the er anymore?

No way they could have done that after the way they ended last season, hoops. And now they're set up for two pretty meaty story lines with Abby/Luka's baby and Linda Cardellino shooting her ex ... deservedly, but certainly not in self-defense.

Seriously. The Plague? They couldn't have come up with something a little more plausible than the plague? This show is a guilty pleasure. I know its bad and often over the top, but that was beyond even my willingness to suspend reality.

Does hospital drama required to have a plague episode?

For Moddy's sake, I was waiting for Bailey to say something about her va-jay-jay.
