Greatest thing before sliced bread?

The phrase "the greatest thing since sliced bread" is a bit overused.
Sliced bread was first sold in stores in 1928.
So it raises the question -- what was the greatest thing before sliced bread? ;D ;D ;D

I find it funny that unsliced bread is now more expensive than sliced bread. It actually devalues the product.
