For some reason, Mississippi is fairly lean on truly bizarre team nicknames, but we have a few that are unusual:

    Taylorsville Tartars
East Union Urchins (whose colors are the same awful brown and yellow of the original San Diego Padres)
Greenville-Weston Honey Bees (their boys are the Hornets)
    Kosciusko Whippets
Wayne County War Eagles (and, yes, they definitely have an Auburn thing going with their unis)
    Ocean Springs Greyhounds
    Caledonia Confederates
    Houston Hilltoppers
    Mooreville Troopers
Lafayette Sailorettes (their boys are the Commodores)
    St. Aloysius Flashes
    Vicksburg Missy Gators
    Wesson Cobras
    Gulfport Admirals

Port Gibson is going through an identity crisis, too. Used to be the Blue Waves. In the last couple of years they've started calling themselves the Port Gibson Blue Wave Fighting Sharks.
It sounds like a move from a badly-dubbed episode of "Dragonball Z".

Nothing that comes out of Port Gibson will ever surprise me, or shock me.

I'm amazed that I haven't contributed to this in some way.

    From the Hoosier state:

    Active

    Forest Park Rangers
    Frankfort Hot Dogs
Indianapolis Northwest Space Pioneers (the school opened in the 1960s)
    LaPorte Slicers

    Rising Sun Shiners
    Shoals Jug Rox
    Tell City Marksmen
Vincennes Alices (named after the book "Alice of Old Vincennes")
    Washington Hatchets

    Holton Warhorses
Huntingburg Happy Hunters (who consolidated with the Holland Dutchmen to form ... the Southridge Raiders ... ugh!)
Hymera Shakamaks (named after a nearby forest ... there has since been a consolidated school named Shakamak ... of which Hymera is not a part).
    Ireland Spuds
Jackson Twp. Stonewalls (and we're nowhere near the Confederacy ... Roanoke also used the name)
    Klondike Nuggets
    Ladoga Canners
Lincoln Railsplitters (who later consolidated with the Onward Redcoats)
    Lynnville Lyndies
Montezuma Aztecs, Mecca Arabs & Rosedale Hot Shots consolidated together (to form another school with a lame name, the Riverton Parke Panthers)
    Michigantown Ganders

The Treeing Curs, inspired by the regular winners of the World Squirrel Dog Hunting Championship at Snookie's Bluegrass Auditorium in LeBlanc, La., was the name of my first fantasy baseball team.

I'd say I miss them too, ... but my wife might find out.
Loved the bumpersticker and wish I had one. Ah, the sweet and innocent times of the mid-1980s.

I know of a Senior A hockey team here in Ontario called the Muskies. The story I was told was, they were to have been called the Huskies. But when their New York Ranger-style sweaters arrived, for some reason there was an "M" in place of the "H."

And they remain the Muskies today, with a fish logo and everything - they're even nicknamed the Fish - even though the town in which they play doesn't have a river, a harbour or any kind of body of water anywhere nearby.

Out here in the AJHL -- alberta junior hockey league -- we have the Olds Grizzlys. Apparently they can't spell in Olds. Innocent enough, sure, but after having to write it out for a hockey season you feel rather stupid doing so. I have now had to write it out for six of my eight years in the business.

You forgot the between periods fish toss!

Asked a friend of mine who is a big Muskies fan -and former outdoor educator in that area - about the origin of the Muskie name. He said there might be some fish at the Forks of the Credit which isn't far from there. Doubt there are any muskies.

Some great nicknames in that loop.
