Just laying out our scoreboard, and I come across this team name from the California Leagues in the transactions section under baseball: RANCHO CUCAMONGA QUAKES.
I have no idea how long they've been around. Or even what a Cucamonga is.

    I mean wow.

I think Rancho Cucamonga is the city's name.

The Macon Whoopee is still the greatest name ever.

"Cucamonga" comes from a Tongva place name (perhaps pronounced [kukɑ'mʌŋnɑ]) that probably means "sandy place", although Vera Rocha, Chief of the Shoshone Gabrielino branch, has stated that the meaning is "Place of the villages where the waters come out". Cuc or Kuc = come, come from or come to. Amo = water, wet, spring and Nanga = place of a village.[citation needed] An alternate theory, that it means "light over the mountain", is almost certainly a fanciful invention, since the "-nga" (or "-ngna") place name ending is found in many other Tongva-derived place names in the region.

Rancho Cucamonga is the city's name.

And I'll second what SC said about Macon Whoopee.

    U. of Santa Cruz Banana Slugs is a close second.

Found this after googling weird sports team names:

An amateur hockey team (I'll leave the name blank until you click on the link).

I thought Nippon Ham Fighters was the greatest name until I realized Nippon Ham was a place.

Then I mocked Joe Buck's stupidity when he said Daisuke Matsuzaka played for the Ham Fighters in Japan.

The St. John's Muleskinners - a military school in Kansas.

Macan Whoopee definitely gets some props too.

Rancho Cucamonga is a city in Southern California, which of course experiences a lot of earthquakes. The Quakes have been in the California League since 1993. They are the high Single-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

I'll put the Gulf South Conference up against any league, anywhere with this partial lineup:

    Arkansas-Monticello Boll Weevils
Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys (you'd think the women's team would be Wonder Women ... wrong, Golden Suns ... huh?)
Delta State Statesmen (unofficial nickname: Fighting Okra)
    Henderson State Reddies
    Southern Arkansas Muleriders
West Florida Argonauts (Hey! to the CFL! and to Jason!)
