I was listening to the radio this morning when they played a cover of Wham!/George Michael's "Careless Whisper" by Seether. Afterword, there was a lengthy debate of what are the greatest covers of all time.

Thought I'd extend this to all of you SportsJournalists.com folk.

Dolly Parton's cover of "Stairway to Heaven".

Well, for starters, the Seether version of "Careless Whisper" is fucking awful.

I think the gold standard may be Hendrix doing "All Along the Watchtower."

Haven't we done like five threads on this?

I didn't care much for Seether's rendition of it, either. I've always loved Meticalla's remake of Bob Seger's "Turn the Page." Not, by any means, the greatest cover of all time, but still a great tune.

    Conservative estimate, yes.

I didn't find anything when I typed a few entries into the search box, but if someone finds it, then the Mods can nuke this at will.

  8. If we hadn't done this thread repeatedly -- which we have -- this would still be END. OF. THREAD.

Aretha Franklin's cover of Otis Redding's "Respect" and Tina Turner's rendition of CCR's "Proud Mary" belong in the conversation.
