Great shows that were too smart for audiences

    Sirs, Madames,

On one useless summer evening more than 20 years ago I saw Diner, a pilot produced in the wake of the movie. It aired but wasn't picked up. Only one cast member from the movie: Paul Reiser. Same sets and everything, plus one character, The Gripper, who went around looking for handshakes so he squeeze the life out of unsuspecting rubes. I have a real soft spot for the movie and the pilot wasn't half bad. It was probably a little too smart--witty rather than ha-ha-funny--for network heads. I think it would have found an audience.

    YHS, etc
