Great Piece on Benn/McClellan

A while back I found a download link to the Benn/McClellan fight. I had seen it at the time but watching it again really brought home to me the ferocity of that fight. It was boxing at its best and it was boxing at its worst.

This month, in London, Benn and McClellan are meeting again for the first time in twelve years. The circumstances are very different though.

Anyway, Kevin Mitchell is probably my favourite sports writer. Well, I really like his boxing pieces. I could care less about cricket and some of the other sports he, sometimes, covers. A few weeks ago he wrote a piece on Benn as he approaches the reunion. It's one of the best bits of writing I have read in a very long time.

I might be pointing out the obvious here, but Mitchell wrote a short but very good book about that fight called War, Baby. It's worth picking up for sure.

 

Yeah, I keep meaning to get a copy off Amazon.

Six years ago Mitchell did a two part piece on the fight based on his book.

Those articles might be the best pieces of sports writing that I have ever read.

To put it in exaggerated terms, they took my breath away.

Those pieces, simply, left me in awe.

 

That was a terrific read.

 

A few weeks ago ITV, who aired the Benn/McClellan fight in the UK, showed a tribute to Gerald McClellan as part of one of their boxing cards. Well, tribute is the wrong word. They aired a really good piece on the fight that was, somewhat, based on the Kevin Mitchell article.
