Tripling his salary is news, any way you slice it.

If you didn't pay him this much, he'd be snatched up by the CFL. Or Arena Football.

What does Dee Smith make to negotiate bad deals for the players?

It's news because he's been at the forefront of two labor conflicts in the last two years.

David Stern reportedly makes $23 million a year. Bud Selig reportedly earns $22 million a year. In 2010, Goodell made less than them at $11.6 million in salary and perks.

In Tagliabue's last year, 2005, the NFL made $6.16 billion. Last year, it made $9.5 billion. There isn't an NFL franchise than isn't one of the 50 most valuable sports franchises in the world, and half the teams are valued today at more than $1 billion.

I am sure the owners are very happy with Goodell's performance. And they pay his salary.

Goodell is The Accidental CEO. Almost all of that profit increase was set in motion before he got there, by the NFL Network and the TV contracts. He doesn't do a damn thing to change any of that, and in fact he bungled the fucking shit out of the NFL Network's beginnings.

They pay him that much for the same reason they build $1.2 billion stadiums when $800 million stadiums would be perfectly fine. They like to show everyone how much money they have.

Can't wait to see what he made in 2012, which would truly be news that's breaking.

Goodell got the big raise for services rendered during the lockout. The owners didn't lose a nickel (nor did the players to a work stoppage), they got a 10-year contract with much (not all) of what the owners wanted and perhaps most of all, Goodell helped keep the owners from tearing each other's throats out during the talks. It's a volatile group. Maybe in 2012, he made less. I doubt it, but if there was ever a year Goodell would get a big bonus, it'd be 2011.
