Girl plays baseball story

Legally, you're correct. If the school has an equivalent opportunity, a girl can't challenge for the right to play on the boys team. However, that has no bearing on if the baseball coach were to accept her on his roster. He can roster any student who meets the district's requirements. If the coach's decision were to be challenged -- say, by a macho father who didn't want his son playing alongside a girl -- the girl would likely be sent back to softball.

But if the school doesn't provide an equivalent opportunity (and no, volleyball is not an equivalent opportunity to football), there's nothing that can keep her from playing if she makes the team.
