Who didn't know this was coming? Still, 160 is a staggering total.

    Good luck to those folks.

Everyone I know at Gannett hates the job anyway.

I guess there's a good reason for that.

Forgive my ignorance, but is there a difference between layoffs and buyouts? i realize accepting a buyout is voluntary and they layoff isn't, but is there a difference in the type of compensation package offered?

    It varies, Riddick.
A buyout generally has a bigger payoff because they're trying to encourage people to go. But not always.
A layoff? You're out and here's what you get, like it or not.

    Papers affected:

The voluntary buyouts were offered to 166 full-time employees over age 55, with 15 years of service, at the Asbury Park Press, the Courier-Post in Cherry Hill, the Home News Tribune in East Brunswick, the Courier News in Bridgewater and the Daily Journal in Vineland. The Daily Record in Morristown was not involved in the buyout program.
