My newspaper friends in Indy are holding a "Save Our Star" rally today, trying to get citizens to support local journalism and their newspaper. It's such a paradox -- friends fighting to keep their jobs and fighting for local media, except that media is owned by the evil empire.

Iconic and seminal are two most abused adjectives in English language.

Lots of newspapers have told their furloughed people to mooch off the government by filing for unemployment benefits, shifting their obligation onto taxpayers in true chicken-shit fashion. Anyone know if Gannett has advocated that, while pocketing its profits?

Yes. We were even given instructions as to how to do it.

Joe, I have applied for unemployed benefits during each furlough. Would be dumb not to do it.

Employers do pay into the unemployment pool. The government only pays 100 percent of the cost if the worker is granted an extension after 99 weeks.

They're also legally required to tell their employees how to file when they "lay them off" which is technically what furloughs are. So while it is self serving it is also the law.

The wonderful folks at CNHI never once told employees they were eligible for unemployment when initially imposing its mandatory days of without pay. To my recollection, no one knew it was possible at first, at least in our state, until rumors someone had claimed the time began to spread.

    Now, pretty much everyone does.
