Which brings us back to the Deadspin column, with her writing from two years ago.

I'm not usually the one to throw this out there, but what's the thing about Johnny Football that's different from Terelle, Reggie and the Miami 15?

 

But the comparison fails because there is no historical evidence that anyone "followed" Clinton's lead or direction anywhere.

But IF IF IF IF the Manzeil situation is the tipping point that changes the entire landscape of college sports . . . then it's not so ridiculous.

 

IT IS ridiculous, because the reasons for doing it aren't similar. He didn't sell his autograph in order to stand up against indignity. He did it because he wanted to.

It's not a valiant move.

 

Wouldn't Curt Flood be a much better comparison?

 

He sold his autograph so he could sit up front with the whites...

 

Excellent point.

 

Except that Flood's career fell apart after he challenged the reserve clause. Even if Manziel gets suspended for this season (unlikely), he'll still be making millions in the NFL in 2014. And if he's not, he's still got his great-grandfather's oil money to fall back on.

For her next trick, Engel will compare A-Rod to Nelson Mandela.
