    Eating crow:

I just finished a chat with an old friend who lives in Houston, whom I haven't seen in a few years. We may meet in New Orleans on Labor Day.

I guess I'd better pay attention.

You must do breakfast at Petunia's in the Quarter. The crawfish etouffe omelet is divine and they make great bloody marys. The wait staff flames, :-* but they'll take good care of you.

I went back in May, had lunch at Dooky Chase's...the entire dining room was closed off save one room. When I was a kid that place was always packed. Nowadays they only serve from 11 to 2:30pm. It's sad, really, but a lot of their longtime customers haven't, and aren't, coming back.

I hate to say this too, but the food was good, but not as good as before Katrina. Kind of a metaphor for the city in general at this stage.

Mother's on Canal, if it's open, and Frank's on Decatur for the muffuletta.

Don't worry. Grizzled Popeye's veteran. Red beans and rice and two biscuits = majestic.

Thanks to y'all for all the tips.

I'm just not a big beefeater. I'd much rather have pork, chicken, or fish than beef. Never ate steak growing up. Mama always made pork chops or fried chicken instead. Big family meals on the weekends were reserved for a nice catfish house somewhere.

The same could be said of the staff here:

but I don't even know if it's open anymore, I'm sad to say.

dargan, Camellia is about more than burgers. Keep it on your list, even if just for the red beans and rice.

Now, where's IJAG? If she can fight the good fight to keep Dr Pepper period-free, I'll bet she can help me with Popeyes and the apostrophe people keep trying to give it.

    ;)

Wife and I had Sunday brunch at Mr. B's Bistro in the Quarter a few months ago. Top notch, including a jazz band walking around the joint.

You're right. I know "my" New Orleans, that little, tiny slice of the city that I've found. Other favorites:

Favorite "nice" restaurant: Jacques-Imo's. Somebody recommended the alligator cheesecake. I love the crawfish cheesecake.
Favorite NOLA experience: Vaughan's, in the Bywater, on Thursday night. Starts out with ping-pong on the dance floor, followed by a smokin' set by Kermit Ruffins and the BBQ Swingers, topped off with a ginormous pot of free red beans and rice somewhere around midnight.
Favorite beer bar/sports bar/bar food: Cooter Brown's, corner-ish of St. Charles and Carrolton.
Favorite deli sandwiches: Cafe Maspero's in the Quarter.
Favorite hangout bar: The Kingpin on Upperline/Lyons in Uptown.
Favorite bed-and-breakfast: Garden District Bed and Breakfast on Magazine.
Favorite burritos: Juan's Flying Burrito on Magazine.
Favorite touristy thing to do: Hurricanes at the Piano Bar in Pat O'Briens
Favorite "Gee, this is on Bourbon Street" thing to do: Fritzel's European Jazz Pub.
    Favorite concert venue: Tipatina's
