For those who don't want to click on the link to know what this is about: it's a story about the Cubs naming Kerry Wood the closer.

Look, he won't be the closer for long because he'll be on the DL within a month.

I'm not sure as a Cubs fan I like Wood as the closer unless he's around the plate a heck of a lot more than last year. If he can start throwing strikes and he has the heater going, then I might really like it. But I'm skeptical.

Haven't the Cubs already been mathematically eliminated from the palyoffs?

He'll be shelved for the season by June 1.

    Guaranteed.

Wasn't this yesterday's news on the baseball thread?

It was, but I guess Chef felt it deserved its own thread.

I still don't think this is about putting the best guy in the job. Closing simply isn't as physically taxing as setting up the way most managers use their bullpens. It is easier to protect Wood's arm in this role, and they can always use Howry or Marmol to fill in if Wood gets overworked.

Marmol is probably the Cubs' best reliever right now, but he doesn't have any real experience as a closer, either, so I can see the thought behind giving Wood the first shot.

Eh, nothing wrong with pulling it out in a thread of its own. And I say that as the person who was D_B'd.
