A 1988 Ford Tempo, from 1996 until I wrecked it in 1999. Tan, two-door, automatic, and a piece of God-forsaken shit.

1977 Dodge Monaco (think Hill Street Blues cop car) with a 318 passed down from mom in 1982. It earned the nickname Monaco Marauder for many reasons, but one was that engine compartment modifications increased horsepower over 50 percent. It couldn't turn, but it could fly.
My mom's replacement was a 1982 Olds that was a total POS right off the assembly line. So she borrowed my car one time (she sold real estate and I kept my car immaculate)m so she comes home that night and at dinner tells my dad how proud she is that I've kept the car so nice. "I can tell you, it runs better now than it ever did," she said. My dad nodded approvingly. They had no idea I had spent the previous summer at the auto shop I worked at with Richie the engine specialist making sure it was the baddest "mom" car in town.

1987 Jeep Cherokee. Bought it used my senior year of high school and drove it for eight years. I proposed to the wife in that car (hey, it was pouring outside), and two years later she cried at the dealership when we traded it in.

One of the first things I did in the Jeep was go on a high-school scavenger hunt, and among the items to find was a horseshoe. Someone forgot to take it out of the car at the end of the hunt, and it stayed on the floor of the backseat. That horseshoe has remained in every car I've owned since.

This, my friends, is a 1974 Datsun B210 with turtle-shell hubbies. My friends called it the "Booger."

  5. My first car was a 1983 Chevrolet Chevette. The thing was a beast. It was impossible to get stuck in the snow and real easy on the wallet when it came to gas. Looked like monkey crap, but is probably my favorite car I've ever driven.

The whole car would do a little shimmy once you hit about 50, but it didn't stop me from getting a speeding ticket doing 57 in a 35 my senior year of high school.

The first car I drove was my mom's 1994 Buick Century, which got totaled three days before my 14th birthday (when I could get a license). The first car I drove legally was my great aunt's 1982 Chrysler New Yorker (you want to talk about a boat? Yeah...this would be it) that I inherited when she stopped driving. Then it caught fire (and was subsequently turned into a demo car) and the first car I drove to school was my dad's 1994 Chevy Silverado, which I easily put about 20,000 miles on from my sophomore year of high school to my freshman year of college. I actually just bought my first car (it was a graduation present from my parents because they're still helping me with payments) and it's a 2007 Chevy HHR.

In March of 1979 I bought my first car, a 1974 Mustang II Ghia. Mine was just like the one in the picture except it was white with the blue vinyl roof. It had 62,000 miles on it and I bought it for $1,500. Seller wanted $1,800 but my dad basically begged the guy to give it to us for $1,500.

It was a 4-speed with the easiest shifting you could ever imagine. I think I mentioned this on another thread, but you could drive that sucker without the clutch (and I did once when the clutch went).

I drove it for about 50,000 miles and loved every minute I had that car. It was the first car in the family with an FM stereo.

If I ever came in to some big money one of the first things I will do is go out and find another 74 mustang, although I might indeed opt for one of the hatchbacks.

Just looking at the picture makes me feel younger.

First car driven: Ford station wagon (1984, not a full-size one).

First car bought by me: Used Isuzu 4-door sedan bought off the son of my hometown's mayor. Damn thing was a piece of crap within a year.

Soon after, I bought a used pickup that was low miles, great condition and worked for a handful of years before I bought a new car, 1996 Honda Accord. I currently have a 2002 Honda CRV bought new.

For Christmas 1984 (a week after my 16th birthday). I was presented with a 1974 Ford Mustang II.

(Like Tony, mine came with the Ghia package — a vinyl roof! w00t!)

A month later, it died. :'(

1955 VW Bug with a ragtop. Mine was green. I got my license in '83 but my dad had owned it since the late 50s. It was in beyond immaculate condition.

Got hit by a guy with no insurance when I was 18. The car was totaled.

Dude. We had the same car!! Did the cloth ceiling cover sag? Did you have a hole in your muffler? What about the standard tranny?
