OK, so what was the reason you were so eager to know this little tidbit?

Simple explanation - collecting on a bet.

According to the Charlotte Observer (Above the Rim blog) ...

Duke and North Carolina fans may differ in their opinion of the selection of Karl Hess to referee his first NCAA championship game Monday night. Hess was the lead official on the crew that ejected Duke’s Gerald Henderson for the flagrant foul that broke North Carolina center Tyler Hansbrough’s nose March 4.
Whether you agree with that call or not, Hess is one of the ACC’s best officials and deserved his position in this game. Edward Corbett and Tony Greene, who both worked their third NCAA title game Monday night, also are excellent referees. - Ken Tysiac

Hess is pretty good. He ought to be. He works enough damn games!

I think Hess works the second-most games, after Jim Burr, who had surgery during the Sacramento subregional. And Burr, to me, is the best there is.

One of them called the first Florida-Ohio State game, but I don't remember the name.
For some reason I thought that was odd.

    WHAT!?!?!?!?!?!?!

If he returns next season he offically becomes the worst ref in Division I, assuming the mantle once proudly held by his fraternal troll-twin Tim Higgins. Higgins apparently is retiring.

    Whoopee!

You bet on refs? Wow, and I thought I needed to go to a gambling addiction specialist.

How does this guy keep getting good assignments?

The two things I can't stand (and we've dealt with them at the HS level where I coach, too) are officials who let personal disputes spill out onto the court to settle grudges with coaches and officials who seem to believe the crowd paid to watch them, instead of the 10 players in uniform.

I've seen several HS officials do this, but the most blatant violator of both of these at the college level is Ted Valentine. (OK, Ed Hightower violates No. 2 quite a bit, as well, but he's a decent official).
