from what i've heard, there is one in-house candidate and several more outside (most with ties to the singleton group, or previous ties to the Daily News) that have expressed interest. should be an interesting process.

circulation is down, but the sports section is still a big draw because of superior local and regional coverage. the la times is still top dog on national stuff, but its local coverage is nonexistent.

It wasn't too many years ago that San Gabriel, the P-T, the Daily Breeze, the Sun and the Daily Report/Bulletin were legitimate mid-sized papers, holding their own in competitive markets. One consolation is that because all these areas watch the same TV stations, interest in the major programs is steady throughout Southern California.

Of the pro sports beats in the SoCal area, Angels, Clippers, MLS teams and, to some extent, the Ducks, are given to the non-Daily News papers.

By "local" I presume you mean high school sports.
Not, Lakers and Dodgers and USC...

Correct. Namely, local colleges (Cal State Northridge for the Daily News, Long Beach State for Long Beach, Cal State San Bernardino for San Bernardino, Cal Poly Pomona for the Daily Bulletin, etc.) and, of course, high schools and nearby JCs.

This is not a good job.
The amount of actual journalism done by this position: Nil, naught, zilch, zero.

David Wasson from the Tuscaloosa News is an up-and-comer. He would be a great candidate!

  8. OK, I'll say it first:

    Thanks for stopping by, David!

(But seriously, they should be able to hire someone in L.A. from a bigger market than .......... Tuscaloosa.)

Nick Saban is NOT interested in the job ....

yeah, maybe someone from Miami... that is if you guys can stop collectively sobbing and hyperventilating in the wake of your adolescent name-calling coverage of the Saban departure.

  11. Alabama reporters were more interested in asking whether Saban would employ press coverage than in asking him why he lied. That was weak.

There has been shuffling with the higher-ups. Are they interviewing anyone for this job or just letting it sit like they had with the SE opening?

And wasn't Anastasi pretty much loathed by the entire staff when he was there?
