Pretty smart move on their part. They were probably guessing someone was going to tweet something inappropriate after this shooting.

The motus operandi at the Extremely Sanctimonious Programming Network is make everybody think they care about more than touchdowns and slam dunks. They also feel they will tell you when to be happy or sad. This goes back to 9/11 when they told me how to mourn. I didn't watch the network for a month or so.

Twitter didn't exist when the Virginia Tech shootings happened.

Apologies. It was created in 2006. However, businesses/reporters were barely in the mix until 2007/2008 after newspapers and organizations started creating Facebook fan pages.

Plenty of reasons to hate on ESPN, but I don't see how this is one of them.

All of us who look at twitter have noticed the tweets of folks who don't seem to even know there's a big news story going on.

It could be election night, a big sporting event, or something else. It's dominating Twitter, and then you see some tweet on a completely different subject, and it makes the tweeter look out of touch.

That's all ESPN is trying to avoid.

Yes the NFL resumes on Sunday, but this incident also won't be dominating Twitter by then. NFL tweets won't look ridiculous on Sunday, they will be the norm.

This is exactly right. They look silly tweeting about a dunk when everyone else on Twitter is tweeting about the murder of 20 children.

Jeez, the need to pile on ESPN around here is just comical. There is nothing wrong with this policy.

    Granstanding? Really?

Can we just put some of the asshole egos and comments aside and be respectful of the people, families and all involved with this tragedy? Whether it's grandstanding or not, whether it's being respectful or not, how about just quit bitching to be bitching.

Yeah, I get it, you're miserable and your life sucks. So STFU.

Makes you wonder though, if something major broke, like ... oh ... Favre coming back, if ESPN would break their moratorium.

And they had exceptions for actual breaking news.

But, yeah, some "what a dunk by Kobe" tweet looks ridiculous in the midst of hundreds of tweets about the news out of Connecticut.
