I don't want to hijack the thread, but Babe Ruth also died on this date. I wonder who was more popular, Babe or Elvis.

Two of the three most-famous American non-politicians of the 20th century, with Muhammad Ali being the third.

My dad is a huge Elvis fan. We plan on going to Graceland one of these days.

The first event that I can truly "remember where you were" type of thing:

Me, dad, mom, grandpa, grandma, aunt, uncle and cousin had all been down in the field doing farm work. My older female cousin had been left behind to fix supper for everyone when we got back to grandparents' house (which is my house now). We were all coming back up the hill toward the house, my dad driving the tractor, everyone else piled on a wagon. My cousin comes running out of the house to meet us "Elvis is dead!"

    My favorite: Burning Love.

My mom bought a boom box type of 8-track player in the 70s and I remember listening to countless Elvis songs at night because she'd put it on for me to go to sleep by. Two of my favorites were "Thanks to the Rolling Sea" and "Teddy Bear"
    I wouldn't allow "Old Shep"

So ... does anyone here believe in any of the conspiracies floating around about his death?

... his truth is marching on.

Elvis had left the building a few years before I was born, but I do recall the movie marathons on TBS in the 80s, not to mention those awful "Is He Alive?" shows hosted by Bill Bixby. Now, those awful cash-grabs were tragic.
