Dwyane Wade, Ray Allen think NBA players should get paid for Olympics

Fine. If there's no money to pay them, don't pay them then. Find someone who will play for free. And have fun competing.

Somehow, though, we come up with money to field Olympic teams each Olympiad.

    Ahhhhh....

    Someone sees the consequences.

How many athletes do we send to the Olympics? If you want to give a base salary of $50,000 for the time over there plus a bonus of $100,000 for a bronze, $200,000 for a silver and $500,000 for a gold, that could work.

Having them negotiate just to play is a terrible, terrible idea that stinks of greed.

Negotiating fair compensation for services "stinks of greed?" Really? Here in America? Home office of capitalism and free enterprise? Really?

    Devil,

Over and over in this issue, your argument can be boiled down to "This is going to be sooooo hard to figure out how to do, so we should just keep the current model. (Or in the NBA/College hoops age limit debate, tweak the rules so they further shift diminish the power of labor.)

A lot of shit in life is hard. That isn't a reason to not attempt to do what is just.

Currently, there is a pie of money generated by the broadcast of the Olympics. The value of this pie is = X.

NBC and the IOC current get 100 percent of X. (It's probably not quite 100 percent, but for the sake of this argument let's say ion terms of pure profit after overhead and charity donations and whatever sliver the USOC gets + whatever, it's 100 percent.)

What argument can you make, other than "It's too hard!" that would explain why athletes don't deserve a percentage of X?

His reasoning, just like in the age restriction thread is purely selfish. It wil fuck with his entertainment. I just wish he'd be honest about it.

    So who pays the athletes?

    NBC? The IOC? Tax dollars?

I am selfish, but it is OK for Wade to ask for more than what he already makes from the NBA and endorsements?

If this is such a great idea, see if it actually happens.

Why should they write play for free?
