Anyone I know in law enforcement says when storing firearms keep them inoperable and inacessible.
With all the accidents with firearms in homes, I would bet the % that were inoperable and inaccessible is very small. Did you know where your mom
kept her gun? Most of my buddies who are cops, told their kids about guns and their kids knew they weren't toys.

I was a teenager when my mom became a cop, so I had a head start on knowing better than to mess with her guns. My grandpa's rifle was right by the front door (he did live out in the country), and I would have sooner pulled one of my own teeth than touched his gun. I was too young to remember exactly how they taught me, but I know it stuck.

I've told my own kids that if they are ever at a place where a gun shows up -- kids showing off at a party, opening up the gun safe, whatever -- they need to leave. They don't need to make a big scene or anything, just leave quietly.

I have never held a gun. No desire. But at least in New York, you see cops with pistols at their side all the time. Every time I am in Penn Station, I see people holding automatic weapons. I'd have to have been a shut-in to have never seen a gun in person.

I've said this before. I've seen them holstered by police.

I don't own any firearms. Surprise, surprise. :)

My parents once had an old World War II-era rifle, for which they had no bullets, that they once were told would have been very valuable if a small piece hadn't been missing from it. I think my mom sold it to a gun shop for $300 sometime after my dad passed away.

My father always kept a trusty (and very hefty) flashlight that easily could have doubled as a baton on the floor next to my parents' night table. He always considered that the best weapon in our house. Fortunately, it never had to be tested.
