Diving "Zones"

I got a release from an SID tonight saying a local college diver had qualfied for "Zones," which is all well and good, except I (and nobody else on staff either) knows WTF a "Zone" is. I called the SID, but he wasn't around (even though I'd gotten an e-mail from him 2 seconds earlier).

I could look it up, but since I'm lazy and it's after deadline, I was wondering if anybody else here knew what he was writing about.

I'm pretty sure it's the meet you have to qualify for in order to eventually qualify for the NCAA National Championships. Like a regional meet. Or something.

A kid in our town qualified for zones last summer. To my understanding, swimmers/divers that go on to win zone meets qualify for nationals to determine who competes for Team USA.

Is this an NCAA competition or FINA?
