Didn't Anyone Notice in Rehearsal?

Idly dial-twitching during another Mets' pitching change, I inadvertently landed on the abysmal CBS show "Criminal Minds". As ever, evil's on the loose, and the assistant to Mandy Patamkin, the tall guy with the lawn rake up his ass, let forth the following unforgettable line of dialogue.
"If this is the same guy," quoth our hero, "then New York is in for terror it hasn't known since SON OF SAM." (Caps mine).
Uh, fellas, there was this Tuesday in September...

Why do I get the feeling the line was originally written with a 9/11 reference, and then some lawyer/exec type thought it too soon to be referencing that, but they wanted to keep the line anyway?
