May I introduce you to my friend, Black Tar Heroin?

I've learned two thing from this thread:

    1. I didn't know that many men had any kind of brand loyalty or preference for deodorant. I assumed most guys were like me and just got whatever was on sale.

    B. I didn't realize that many guys had sensitive skin and were breaking out in rashes.

It will be a cold day in hell before I buy a solid stick of antiperspirant again. Why would I want some white paste congealing on my armpit hairs and tugging at them like a toddler trying to steer a parent down the candy aisle?

How have you gone this long being you while still assuming anyone is like you?

I didn't realize that gel was a bad thing. I used a stick in high school and my shirts from that era got caked with residue in the pits...been using gels since early college I think and have never had a problem with them ruining shirts.
I also don't sweat a lot outside of actually (trying to) playing sports or doing other physical activities, so gels work fine for me.

When speaking to friends, I've never heard them express any brand loyalty for a deodorant. I know a lot of guys have brand loyalty with cars/trucks, guitars, computers, sneakers, clothing stores, tools, cameras, beer/liquor, jeans, etc.

I know guys have preferences with regard to deodorant species - aerosol in the old days, solid, gel, powder, antiperspirant vs. non-antiperspirant - but I really don't recall anyone mentioning a brand preference.

This is just tremendous. Definitely a product of its time ... and yes, I drenched myself in the stuff junior year of college.

Speed Stick guy here, for the same reason Z-Man brought up.

I pick up a stick of cheap AP at the dollar store (yes, for a dollar).

Yeah, I know it's probably made in the phosphorus/asbestos mines of Bangladesh/Afghanistan, but the price is right.

It seems to work OK -- I don't stink out the joint and usually don't get sweaty, and my skin hasn't broken out, so I'll stick with it. I don't smear on a layer inches thick so I don't have the problem of waxy dingleberries in my armpits or cake deposits on my undershirts.

When I became a manly-man in the early 70s, it was right in the middle of the switchover from roll-on to sprays.

The roll-on always felt gross, plus it always left you WET for about 5 minutes until the crap dried, so I switched over to sprays as soon as I could. (Plus with roll-ons, crusty deposits on undershirts definitely was a problem.)

The sprays seemed to work better but were way more expensive over the course of time. You'd go through half a dozen cans in the same time you'd go through one roll-on bottle.

Finally in the middle-late 80s I made the jump to sticks. Unless there is some new order-of-magnitude improvement in armpit tech, I'll probably stay with 'em.

Degree is by far the best option, and they have a few different scents/styles. I have tried many different types, and I despise that gel shit. Axe stick deodorant actually has some good scents, but that stuff is way too expensive. I would not touch any of those crappy new Old Spice scents. Matterhorn? Denali? Really?

That was a minor factor too but mainly the sticks worked better and were cheaper anyway.
