WASHINGTON (AP) — A former aide to Sen. Maria Cantwell is in federal custody after being arrested on a charge of attempting to sexually exploit a minor.

James Michael McHaney was fired Friday from his job as a scheduler for Cantwell, D-Wash., hours after he was arrested by FBI agents. The FBI said in a charging document that McHaney allegedly tried to set up a meeting with an undercover witness posing online as a teenage boy.

McHaney, who appeared in federal court Saturday, was being held without bond pending a court hearing Wednesday, said Channing Phillips, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office for the District of Columbia.

According to court papers, McHaney, known as Mike, tried to arrange a lunchtime meeting with an unidentified person posing as a 13-year-old boy. When the witness asked whether McHaney was interested in sex with a 13-year-old, McHaney allegedly replied, "I'll be there," the court papers said. He later asked for a photo of the child.

Seriously? You're gonna try and hit Dems on this? Does the name Mark Foley ring a bell, asshole?

Many would be up in arms if the person Mr. McHaney had aided had an (R) after his/her name.

Like they were when Mark Foley did exactly the same thing.

Sure. Except the probability is some will pile on here, and some will point out the fact that he was fired as soon as he was arrested.

And in all likelyhood, they'll be the opposing roles they played when Foley got busted.

I'd say the letter after the name makes a lot of difference to some around here, and quite a few in the media.

And while the family values stuff is always trumpeted as a GOP trait, you regularly see DNC representatives taking the opportunity to point out what a wonderful wife and family they have given the opportunity.

First of all, any of these pervs should be in jail and we should be grateful if they are regardless of what party they are affiliated with.

The reason Foley was such a big deal was the combination of the GOP "family values" mantra and the hypocrisy of his behavior having been known and tolerated by others in the House over a number of years. If it had been a scheduler for Foley as opposed to the congressman, that story doesn't last more than a day. Comparing the Foley incident to this is ridiculous, and would be even if this guy had worked for a GOP senator.

And that's the other part of it, the level of the person involved.

But I'd still bet some to the far right on here, and also with a national voice try to make something of this tonight/tomorrow.

  12. I'm not going to make much of this. It's bad all the way around.

But of course, if it was an R instead of a D, all hell would break loose.
