There is a brand of poison called Tomcat. It works really well. It won't keep them out, but it will do a number on the ones that are there. It's green slabs of stuff (I usually cut them in two) that you put out in various locations. They eat it and burn up from the inside. I get it at Tractor Supply Company, but I'm sure it's available other places.

MAKE SURE it is placed somewhere that pets or children can't eat it or it will kill them, too.

With poison they can end up dead and stinking in the walls. The glue traps are pretty cruel. We always used snap-traps baited with peanut butter and set out in paper lunch bags along the likely routes of mousey travel. Quick. "Painless." No wandering off to decay behind the living room sheetrock. Easy to dispose of without ever touching the mouse, too.

They don't stink with this stuff. It literally cooks them from the inside out and dehydrates them, so there is no stink. Most of the time you can find them, too, because they come out searching for water.
