It occurred to me that I totally forgot about Chuck Berry, who is definitely in the discussion.

EStreetJoe, cranberry and YankeeFan like this.
  2. I read somewhere Bowie was really unhappy with his recording contract and label for most of his early period so he did a lot of really wired, far out shit. Once he got a new deal (I think it was in the 80s), he hit commercial success.

    One of the all-timers, RIP.
Favorite song = 'Panic in Detroit'

If you've got to rank, Dylan is more influential, but it's really a moot point. Bowie was hugely influential.

In addition to his originals, Bowie did a good job of covering others ...

    The Beach Boys ...

    Springsteen ...

Over here on E Street, we’re feeling the great loss of David Bowie. David was a visionary artist and an early supporter of our music. Always changing and ahead of the curve, he was an artist whose excellence you aspired to. He will be sorely missed.

Maybe this should be on the 'Cover Songs' thread, but I just found some info that indicates a live Bauhaus cover of 'Panic in Detroit' from 1987.

Sounds like a possibly great combination of band and song.

They did a great - if faithful - cover of "Ziggy Stardust".
