The title on Journalism Jobs simply says 'Special Writer'

    Here's the listing:

The Dallas Morning News seeks a dynamic, self-motivated journalist to join its team of Dallas Cowboys reporters. As the world’s most valuable sports franchise, the Cowboys command a strong media presence. Stories about the franchise and its ownership touch all areas of the newsroom. The ideal candidate will be a proven digital journalist who is equally adept at spot news, analysis and enterprise. This job requires flexibility and a hunger for surfacing news on a highly competitive beat. The person chosen for this role will be responsible for:

    • Reporting and producing content for all digital platforms, including breaking news, analysis, enterprise, features and photos/video.
    • Developing exclusive sources and storylines that haven't been covered nationally or locally.
    • Writing with depth and authority.
    • Promoting content and reporting on social media channels.
    • Analyzing traffic and social media metrics to enhance decision-making on what type of content to produce and when.
The candidate should possess strong news judgment and excellent verbal and analytic skills; must have the ability to work all stories under pressure with assigned deadlines; and must have the ability to interact productively and enthusiastically with fellow employees and all levels of management.

This job requires a flexible work schedule, including nights, weekends and holidays. Travel will be involved.

Please include with your resume and application five writing clips designed to reflect attributes applicable to this job.

    Requirments:

Bachelors’ degree in journalism or related field. We will consider related experience in lieu of education.

Five years of professional writing experience.

Not to nit pick but I believe Real Madrid or Barcelona are the world’s most valuable sports franchise

Dammit, remember when this big-boy job spun this board for weeks?

Dammit. ... Those days were gold.

agreed. It's amazing how little discussion even big-time jobs engender. Dallas Cowboys beat ... a major sports-editing job. Crickets.

I think much of it has to do with feeling these jobs aren't up for grabs anymore, as if they're already predetermined or head-hunted for. The hiring process for a lot of the big-boy jobs out there feels like a sham.

I'm not sure I agree. Certainly very, very few newspapers use headhunters (they cost a lot of money). I think a lot of jobs get posted and never get filled. But a bigger reason might be that people are just sick of looking for jobs, knowing that the next round of layoffs could wipe them out again.

And, lots of good folks with solid experience have left the industry. Sometimes not by choice.

Or knowing that even if they are qualified for a job, it won’t pay what it used to and it’s therefore not worth pursuing.
