Gotta love those help wanted whizzes that make the paper sound more important than it is.

This paper had a sports editor opening vacant for close to two years in the not so distant past.

They have openings all the time. The ME Troy Turner has been there for awhile after coming back to Farmington a few years ago. Decent stuff to cover with the Connie Mack as the big showcase coverage. They also have an SE and another writer in the sports department. I know when I talked to Troy two years ago about a similar position, pay was in the low-to-mid 20's.

Saw the same and you beat me to it. Yikes.

  7. Troy means well, but he has advanced award-grubbing to high art.

Having lived in the shadow of one casino-free reservation already (and with the magnificent Rocky Mountains practically right down the street), I can tell you that there's nothing happening on the rez that looks like a Western novel.

    Especially salaries.

And it's MediaNews Group, a company with outstanding employee relations and a bright future!

  9. That line is fairly condescending, too. As if the newspaper business is awash in overpaid materialists, but only unsullied true-believers will be excited to work for $19,000 a year.

They are also not in a hurry to hire anybody, so if you get the job you know your top of the line.

Couldn't pay me enough to work in this part of the state. If you like dodging drunks on the roads at night (both in and out of vehicles) and butt-ugly scenery then by all means, go for it. There are some beautiful parts of the state, this aint one of them. The only bonus is good skiing not too far away, as if you could afford to go on that salary.

The only good thing about Farmington is you're an hour from Durango.
