The following position has been filled.

    Thanks.

The Orange County Register is growing bigger and better in sunny California, and sports coverage is central to our strategy. We are looking for an experienced copy editor – with skill and flair – to join our sports desk.

We need deadline-driven people with news judgment, keen attention to detail, command of AP style, and the ability to write headlines that make readers laugh, cry and pay attention. Experience with page layout, wire editing, CCI or Onset is a plus. Night and weekend work is required.

Responsibilities include shaping stories for publication to Register standards by:
    • Reading the story and correcting mistakes including spelling, grammar, style and facts
    • Writing engaging headlines, captions and refers
    • Checking graphics
    • Trimming to fit
    • Raising issues of omission, bias or libel
    • Contacting the reporter, columnist or editor for clarification

Candidates must have a deep knowledge and love of sports – especially those of highest interest to Orange County fans – and approach the job with a sense of fun.

This is a collaborative department so a copy editor needs to be able to work well with other members of the copy desk as well as designers, photo editors, line editors and other members of the newsroom.

Candidates should have a bachelor’s degree and at least three years of copy editing experience. Knowledge of Orange County is a plus. The position pays a competitive salary based on experience and includes a comprehensive benefits package. Orange County is a diverse community, and we value diversity in our newsroom.

To apply, send resume, cover letter, salary requirements and copies of 10 of your best printed headlines to resumes@freedom.com. Write “Sports copy editor” on the subject line of your email. No phone calls please.
