    Bespoke Cocktail "Smokey", Trenchermen

    1 oz. Mezcal Vida
¾ oz. Contrato Vermouth (I used Carpano Antica)
¼ oz. Salmiakki Dala (I used Fernet Angelico)
    ¼ oz. Green Chartreuse
⅛ oz. Ardbeg 10 Year Float (I used Laphroaig)
Garnished with a grapefruit peel expressed over the glass.

We asked the bartender at the Trenchermen to make us a "Smokey" drink, and this is what we got. He used both smokey Mezcal, and smokey, peaty Scotch.

This was my attempt to remake it at home, but it is now cataloged under my name at the bar for future order.

    2 oz. Bourbon
    ¾ oz. Lemon Juice
¾ oz. Earl Grey Tea Syrup*
    ⅛ oz. Laphroaig
    Egg White

    * To make tea syrup, make a strong tea concentrate. I used three tea bags in 8 oz. of water. Once that's steeped add an equal amount of sugar.

For all egg white drinks, shake without ice first, to incorporate the egg. Then shake again with ice.

Recipe is an estimate, based on cocktail from Perennial Virant, Chicago, IL

How much money do you have tied up in liquor? My goodness, that photo is impressive.

I've been building the bar for over 3 years now. I probably have about 75 bottles of booze right now. If you were to buy everything at ounce, I'd guess you'd be looking at around $3,000.

But, I usually only buy a bottle or two at a time, and then make a bunch of different recipes with my new haul. Lately, we've been on a Mezcal kick.

And, when you think about it, these would be $12 cocktails if I bought them out at a bar. If we make a couple of drinks at home before we go out to dinner on a Saturday night, and then have just one cocktail each with dinner instead of two, we've saved about $30 by the time you factor in tax and tip.
