Remember the trailer from the Transformers movie that had everyone wondering "WTF was that?" Well, website reported to have a much-awaited second trailer that is supposed to be on before Beowulf beginning this weekend.

Hmmm. Interesting. The monster's pretty damned scary.

I couldn't find a link on nj.com, but in today's Ledger, Lisa Rose did a nice piece on the marketing campaign for the movie. It involves a lot of the little tricks Abrams uses with "Lost," websites for the fake products/companies in the movie, MySpace pages for the characters (who actually sometimes reply to e-mails) and how the studio has been able to keep much of the movie under wraps, especially the monster. She also lists some websites that help develop the story of Cloverfield, so viewers have a sense of what's led up to the 1-18-08 attack on Manhattan:

    http://www.cloverfieldmovie.com
    http://www.1-18-08.com
http://www.slusho.jp <-- A soft-drink/cover company for some sort of evil conglomerate that may or may not have something to do with unleashing the monster.
    http://www.tagruato.jp <-- said evil company
http://www.tidowave.com <-- Tagruato's chief nemesis, an environmentalist group
http://www.jamieandteddy.com <-- Two characters from the movie. The password is "jllovesth"

My biggest question is this: where did the studio come up with the name "Cloverfield?" I'm still scratching my head about that one. Can't wait until it comes out, though.

Maybe it's just me, but I thought the original trailer was better than any of the others. That alone was enough to make me put this on my list of must see's.

If memory serves, the project didn't have a name for a long time, in part to create buzz about the mysterious Abrams movie with no name. They started using Cloverfield as a random project name and eventually decided to keep it as the title. Of course, the whole story could be bullshit and part of the marketing.

I really, really want this to be good. In part just because I like to see studios rewarded for trying something non-formulaic.

Ohhhh boy! JJ Abrams making a movie about a mysterious, shadowy monster that wrecks havoc on a whole bunch of people! And he sends out a bunch of clues that may or may not really be clues! This has never happened before in the history of mankind!

I admit, I wanted to see this when I saw the trailer. Then I heard it was JJ Abrams, and I was decidedly less enthusiastic. Then I read a story about the marketing of the movie, and I said fuck that shit.

I fucking loathe JJ Abrams. He's a one-trick fucking pony. If he spent half as much time executing his ideas as he did coming up with buzz-worthy promotional tools, he'd be a fucking genius. Instead, he keeps bluffing witih his 2-7 off-suit.

Fuck JJ Abrams. I hope this turns out to be as big a bust as Snakes on a Plane.

And if this movie was any good, it sure as hell wouldn't be PG-13.

Slusho soft drinks have shown up in both Lost and Alias.

I still think this'll be just another Godzilla movie.
