    Classic scene from Josey Wales.

No love for Jimmy Stewart? Or Randolph Scott?

    And I'll take John Wayne.

The words on his Congressional medal says it all:
    John Wayne, American

The Outlaw Josey Wales is my second favorite Western, but The Searchers is the best by a mile.

The Duke also made some surprisingly realistic Westerns -- like She Wore a Yellow Ribbon.

Gotta go with Clint as director, given the Oscar winners after helming some of his own best movies.

Duke and The Alamo? Eh, not so much.

Still not changing my vote, though.

And what Buck said: I interviewed Ted Williams and wrote a feature back in the day in which I referred to him as baseball's John Wayne. Probably stole that line from someone else, can't recall. But from the personal style (golf shirt under sport coat, swagger, booming voice) to the five years flying jet fighters in between all-American pasttime, he was as much or more John Wayne than John Wayne.

Did I mention that a nephew is named Josey, after the character?

Better that than Philo, as in Philo Beddoe.

New Dirty Harry DVD collector's set arrived from Amazon today. Feel like quite the fanboy, looking through the rare, miniaturized production letters with studio heads writing about Frank Sinatra's injured hand and inability to wield the .44 Magnum, thus his need to withdraw. Original title different too: "Dead Right."

Probably screwed up by not getting the Blu-Ray version, but didn't want to drop the extra coin for a format that I don't even have.

I have the Dirty Harry DVD set that was released a few years ago. Dunno if there was an updated set recently released, but I like the bunch I have.

Make no mistake, I like Clint Eastwood and he was good in westerns. But John Wayne WAS the western film.

I'll take John Wayne. Nobody played John Wayne better than John Wayne.

Give it to him for The Searchers, Rio Bravo and Big Jake.

Edit: I"ll throw The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance in there as well.
