The Clarion-Ledger in Jackson, Miss., has an opening for a full-time clerk to paginate the Scoreboard section. Additional duties include answering phones and collecting and inputting high school scores, statistics, rosters and schedules. We use QuarkXpress to paginate and Filemaker for our high school database. Job includes night-time work, weekends and some holidays. Email a cover letter and resume to Sports Editor Rusty Hampton at rhampton@clarionledger.com. No phone calls, please.

Your sports assistants are full-time? That's great. Many papers treat them like whipping boys.

Not mutually exclusive, of course. ... but Rusty is good folks. Would be a great way to get in on the ground floor.

Any chance of the clerk being let out of the cage to write occasionally?

If a team's top four quarterbacks all go down in the same game, it never hurts to have a punter who can take a center snap and wing one.

Everything is negotiable. Our No. 1 need is a Sports Assistant who can paginate the Scoreboard page and help coordinate collecting summaries and stats and rosters and schedules -- on a state-wide basis. We take 150 football games most Fridays and 150 basketball games, boys and girls, every Tuesday and Friday.
