The Jackson Clarion-Ledger is taking applications for a sports writer to fill one of two potential positions. The first is an Ole Miss beat writer. The other is as our Jackson State beat writer. The Ole Miss writer will live in Oxford and cover all aspects of Ole Miss athletics. The JSU position is based in Jackson. In addition to covering JSU football, the JSU writer works some copy desk shifts and fills other assignments, including high school coverage. Our reporters write way more than game stories. They flesh out and explore the off-the-field issues and stories as much or more than the games. We are looking for a reporter who understands the importance of connecting to readers 24/7 through social media and our website, one who breaks news via Twitter and then expands on what it means in a blog and the next day’s paper. We want a reporter who has fresh enterprise ideas that readers won’t get anywhere else. To apply, send a cover letter, resume and samples of your work to sports editor Rusty Hampton at rhampton@jackson.gannett.com. No phone calls please.

And a couple of the previous guys, Sekou Smith and Michael Wallace, are NBA beat writers now.

Ole Miss beat for the Clarion-Ledger is the most important and widely-read beat in Mississippi. And apparently, a pretty good springboard.

Any headway on the preps/copy editor position you posted a few months ago?

We have hired Richard Mullins for the design/preps job that was advertised two months ago. He starts soon. Richard was working at the Gannett-Louisiana design hub in Monroe, which has several openings.

Gets said every time, but let me say it again: Rusty's one of the good ones.

Two thumbs up for the CL's sports guys. This is a good opening.

No commentary needed. Rusty said it best in a previous post, "How can anyone be completely insulated from what is going on above them in this business? every bad decision trickles down in some form or fashion."

Working the Ole Miss beat in Oxford or Jackson State beat in Jackson sure beats the MSU one, since you'd have to live in Starkville.
