If you give a punishment and the dude says that he'd stay out there all day if he had to, it sounds like the punishment hit its mark.

Exactly.

I guess I don't really see why this is a big story. The moron skipped jury duty, the judge penalized him, the guy (as I read it) felt badly took his punishment without complaining and went home at the end of the day.
