I just watched the chess episode of Saved By The Bell, where Screech beats the Russian exchange student, Peter. That's where I got the Chessboy magazine and Checkmate of the Month. I forgot about the pawn-shaped pool, though.

I've been playing for a little while now, and while I think I've gotten better, I'm still losing more than I win. I think one of the biggest things I need is a good opening. I usually just get my knights out or try to do the four-move mate which pretty much never works.

    What do you recommend?

Have some fun sometimes, like just go for the queen at all costs. Try a lot of formations around your queen or king. You learn a lot about other players by their reactions to certain things. I've pissed off many a player with unorthodox plays.

If you really want to get into it, go here: http://www.freechess.org/

It's the FICS (Free Internet Chess Server).
