They are a fact of life here if you log on and post via mrsneakie.com or instantunblock.com. And the more you modify a post, the more slashes you get.

These also crop up in headlines in one newspaper I reguarly glance at:
    Soccer players are "booters"
    Wrestlers are "grapplers"
    Cross country runners are "harriers"
    Hockey players are "stickers"
Water polo teams are "Aqua NICKNAME"
    Gymnasts are "tumblers"
Baseball/softball players are "Diamondmen" or "Diamondwomen"
However, this paper has yet to dazzle me with a headline word to replace tennis players.

    Other pet peeve:
Arguably as in "he's arguably the best player in the school's history"

To be honest, two of the first four entries were from university web sites. Of course they are going to think it's OK.

About the use of said in a quote. It should always be, "so and so said." Unless you're describing something about the person you're quoting like "said so and so, who scored 10 points and grabbed 8 rebounds.

My SE can not get it down and what makes it even worse is he'll use both "said so and so" and "so and so said" in the same story just to "spice" it up.

  9. Netters.

    Shit, that was too easy.

  10. Not sure why that bothers you so much. I don't think it makes any difference which order you use.

"That's a strange pet peeve," said Johnny Douchenozzle.

"I agree, it is a bit odd," Danny Bumblefuck said.

Honestly, I think I prefer the first one.

Other than the first one isn't correct grammatically.

  12. "Whilst" differs from most on this list in that it hasn't become overused.

"Whilst" even beats "while" during satire or sarcasm, which goes back to the thing about column versus story.

That said, "Cinderella" has croaked absolutely and continues croaking this very month.
