Funeralized. And, as Dave Barry would say, I am not making this up.

  2. Methinks we've gone too long without mentioning this board fave.

That leads me to my favourite pet peeve, unnecessary punctuation on words that shouldn't be possessive.

What the hell is a "safety" in baseball terms? A double?

And doubledown...thank you. No f-ing apostrophes unless it's possessive. Not for anything. Not for fives and tens and twenties, not for RBI (or RBIs...don't want to start another debate on that one), not for anything.

We had an argument about that back in the 80s.

Or maybe it was warmer. Yeah, it was in the 90s when we had that argument.

    (ducking)

    Phrases (or words) I hate:
    • Lid-lifter (instead of season opener)
    • Plated
    • Quelled
    • One supposes
    • Any preposition (in the win, on the day, etc.)

If I had EVER seen a story in which the writer used the term "lid-lifter" for anything other than a reference to a guy using a toilet, I'd smack the writer with a pica pole.

I have the power\\\\\\\'s to mess thing\\\\\\\'s up with improper use\\\\\\\'s of apostrophe\\\\\\\'s that make a bunch of slash mark\\\\\\\'s when I post thread\\\\\\\'s!

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

Edit: (Wow, look at that. It also messes up the subject line.)

    My pet peeve....

"It's going to be a tough season for us," said <b>Coach</b> Dimwit. "We'll struggle early on, but improve as we get better."
"I hope we can just be consistent", said <b>Coach</b> Dimwit.

Just say the last name, I think most readers know he's the coach. And if you're going to use coach or head coach, make sure its in correct AP style and do not capitalize it...

Of course, the SE I know who does this - also has used "this reporter" in a story before....

What IS the deal with all these slash marks?
