Boy, this Beckham thing started out to be a disaster. It's been great since.

With a lot of them, you either have to buy tickets to multiple games or pay more for the LA Galaxy game. At least that's what they did in Dallas where Beckham didn't even make the trip.

I'm not a soccer guy on any level, but the comparisons to the WNBA and saying that only ESPN cares is a joke. The guy is one of the most famous athletes in the world and just because he's been injured for a few games doesn't lessen his impact one bit.

There's no question it's overhyped, but what isn't these days?

Let's wait until the guy plays a few games before we call the whole thing a disaster, eh?

This is 'merica, where people rush to be the first to declare a player a bust or a FRAUD as soon as possible. Even if the evidence isn't there yet.

But the fact he hasn't played yet and isn't going to play effectively any time soon, added to the fact that if he does heal he'll miss games due to England commitments, throw in all the MLS and media-created hype, and a touch of teams raising ticket prices for hyis appearances which may or may not happen . . . and so far, it has been worst-case scenario. There is a lot of time to go on this deal, absolutely. Hell, it's only two weeks in. But in this short time, those who live to rip the game have some ammo.

It will all work out, but the early returns portend the possibility that bad feelings created from the higher ticket prices for a dude who is not showing up yet, will linger.

There's plenty of evidence America doesn't give a shit about soccer.

    That's not the point.

The thread is entitled "Boy, this Beckham thing has been a disaster." That has zero to do with most Americans not giving a shit about soccer. It's way too early to say "this Beckham thing has been a disaster" where Americans give a shit about soccer or not.

Beckham's Welcome to America press conference was on July 13. For a week after that, ESPN gave him non-stop hype... Games were marketed with him playing in Los Angeles, Dallas, and Toronto. He played a few gimpy minutes the first game, and hasn't done anything else.

Its been a disaster so far. The title stands.

Beckham served as the hook to get people into the stadiums to watch MLS. Based on ticket sales plan has worked. The real test is whether the new found fans will be that excited to watch what essentially is double A soccer on field and Beckham sitting on sideline.

At some point there could be a blow back and all those purchased Beckham jersey's could end up on field in a heap.

It has been a PR disaster for ESPN and, to some extent, the LAG. But Beckham's stint in the MLS itself is not a disaster. Sheesh, it's not even started yet.
