But his chain was shorter BECAUSE of what he was coming in on the heels of. A learning curve would have been allowed had Tubby done anything in his final nine years.

He didn't, so the natives were restless already.

Yes, he did nothing in his final nine years except win five SEC's, four SEC regular seasons, make it to the Elite Eight three times and Sweet 16 five times and never lose in the NCAA Tournament.

    What a bastard......

    Again, delusional and ridiculous.

Pretty impressive to never lose but only make the Sweet 16.

    Delusional and ridiculous, yes.

    Racist, no.

Zag is right. It's completely stupid that Tubby was deemed a failure at Kentucky because he was "only" going to the sweet 16 or elite eight. It's also how it is, and Zag can't argue that - no matter how hard he tries.

I don't think he was deemed a failure because he was only going to Sweet 16s.
I just think the UK basketball program, SEC titles or not, had slowly slid downhill in the 10 years since he had taken over the program. And that's not really debatable. He wasn't really bringing in big-time NBA talent and his roster - as he left it for Gillespie - was pretty damn weak, which made the future pretty bleak. He obviously wasn't going to be competing for national championships or Final Fours anytime soon with those players.
It probably wasn't fair that he was judged against Pitino, but then again that's what happens when you take over a program from someone like Pitino.

I'm with Zag though ---- all these hot-shot recruits came to UK because of Calipari, not because of tradition.

yep, that's how it is. And it's not just that he wasn't going to Final 4s. He wasn't going to sniff one with his recruiting going as far south as it did. I don't care if he did have the No. 1 class with Rondo, Morris, Crawford and Bradley. He had some stnkers in there too.

And people LOVED Tubby in Lexington as a person. Sure some hated himbecause he was black, but let's see UNC or some other power school get a black coach and watch the Jesse Helms' of the state come out of the woodwork.

Tubby left because he didn't like that changes in the program were demanded and he took his ball and went home. Plain and simple. If he won, he could be a green and purple swirl and 95 percent of the people could give a shit.

Whether Cal is cheating, well, that's just another UK tradition to uphold.

This thread isn't about Adolph Rupp or Joe B. Hall or Eddie Sutton or Tubby Smith. It's about Billy Clyde and the hilarious handoff to Cali.

    And the door.

    Ah yes.

    The glorious door.

Despite having never signed his contract, Billy still wants to get paid thanks to his 'memorandum of understanding'.
