Bill Boyle RIP

Bill Boyle, a senior managing editor and 21-year veteran of The Daily News, died at his home on Saturday, the newspaper reported. He was 54.

Mr. Boyle was discovered to have stage three melanoma more than a year ago, the newspaper said. As recently as three weeks ago, he was editing the columnist Mike Lupica from a hospital room after surgery.

Mr. Lupica was among many at The Daily News who praised Mr. Boyle. “He had one job from the day he walked through the door of The Daily News, and that was to make the paper smart,” Mr. Lupica said.

Mr. Boyle, a Philadelphia native, came from a newspapering family: His father, Samuel, was a Philadelphia journalist, and his brother, Sam, was a former bureau chief with The Associated Press. Mr. Boyle started his career at The Doylestown Intelligencer in Pennsylvania before moving to The News Journal in Wilmington, Del.

He then became city editor at The Philadelphia Daily News before taking the same position at The Daily News, in Manhattan, in 1986.

During his time at The Daily News, he guided much of the paper’s coverage of major stories — particularly the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and their aftermath.

“You could always rely on Bill for honest appraisal of how the paper was performing,” said The Daily News’s chairman and publisher, Mortimer B. Zuckerman. “He devoted himself to improving our coverage of New York and the world beyond.”

Mr. Boyle was survived by his wife, Gail; his son, Timothy; his mother, Margaret; his brother, Sam; and his sister, Teresa.
