It has to go to Paul Newman, with Emilio a close second.

    Kevin Costner.
Very good in Bull Durham. Okay in For the Love of the Game. And very good again in the Upside of Anger, a movie not many people saw, but has been making the HBO rounds and I watched it there.

Oh and Helen Hunt for her turn as the quarterback in Quarterback Princess. Delightful. :-*

What is this Field o' Dreams you speak of?
Sounds like crazy talk ... you must be hearing whispers when you are working on the farm.

What about the late Jack Warden...
    - "The Champ"
    - "Heaven Can Wait"
    - "Brian's Song"

Not in the same league as many of the others mentioned here, but a nice trio of work.

Come to think of it, nobody will ever play a cold-hearted coach like G.D. Spradlin.

That's none of your damn business, buckdub. And I'll thank you to stay out of my personal affairs.
