Just a few, mainly for the guitar work:

    Voodoo Chile: SRV
    Honkey Tonk Women: Stones
    Sunny Afternoon: Kinks
    Already Gone: Eagles
Don't Take Me Alive: Steely Dan
    Dear Prudence: Beatles
I Can See For Miles: Who
    Celebration Day: Zep

    Bliss.

In the Air Tonight - Phil Collins

    I'll second Huggy on "Layla".

"Rock around the Clock" - Bill Hayley and the Comets. I know it's vocal but it is an intro.

"Funeral for a Friend" - Elton John

No love for "One"? The solo is the highlight of the song but the intro's no slouch. Here's a vote for the Who's Baba O'Reily, Pearl Jam's Rearview mirror and Soundgarden's Black Hole Sun.

Was watching VH1 Classic or some such one night. They were interviewing ex-Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Ed King in a guitar store somewhere (Nashville, I think.) While he was talking about something else, he idly retrieved some random guitar hanging from the wall and started picking out the notes of a D chord. Absolutely sent a chill up my spine; the guy who came up with the opening riff to "Sweet Home Alabama" just casually playing it on a Strat that was not plugged in, and it sounded just as good as it does coming through my speakers on that 1973 CD.

And three_bags: We used to use the intro to Money For Nothing to test our car stereo installations, back in the day when we used to drive cars that were worth less than the stereo equipment inside. We knew we had done it right when the bass could come in without distortion.

    My top 5:

    -- Sweet Home Alabama
    -- Money For Nothing
    -- Hells Bells
    -- Layla
    -- Day Tripper

  6. Sweet Child O' Mine - GNR
    Alive - Pearl Jam

    Allman Brothers -- Whipping Post

Still a really good song, but that intro makes you think it's going to be the greatest song ever.
