Stevie Ray Vaughn's instrumental cover of Hendrix's "Little Wing" is amazing.

As is his cover of "Voodoo Chile."

As his cover of The Chantays' "Pipeline."

    Don't forget 'Cheap Thrills.'
It's got the Crumb art on the front and that great shot of Janis on the back.

  3. All Along the Watchtower as performed by Jimi Hendrix was absolutlely the first one that came to mind for me.

In the Pearl Jam division, I'll take Baba O'Riley...... it, as always, was amazing the other night when they closed with it in Camden II. And, ironically, they covered All Along the Watchtower two nights later when I was at their show in D.C.

The Beatles "Twist & Shout" is a classic cover.
Can't recall if they covered the song "Shout" (which was famously covered in 'Animal House')

Would Hall & Oates cover of "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" get any consideration here?

No. Maverick did a better job.

    My favorite:
"You Belong To Me" - Carly Simon (The Doobie Brothers)

    Honorable Mention:
"Groovy Kind of Love" - Phil Collins (Toni Wine and Carole Bayer Sager)
"Ain't No Mountain High Enough" - Diana Ross (Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell)
"I Heard It Through the Grapevine" - Marvin Gaye (Gladys Knight and The Pips)
"How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)" - James Taylor (Marvin Gaye)

    Sirs, Madames,

I'm tempted to say Esquire's Sonny Liston as Santa Claus, but I digress.

Who: Shakin' All Over (Chad Allen)
    Pretenders: Stop Your Sobbing (Kinks)
Elvis Costello: I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself (Burt Bacharach/Dionne Warwick)
Jerry Lee Lewis: Well, almost anything he touches, but I love ... Money and Your Cheatin' Heart
Johnny Winter And: Jumpin' Jack Flash (Stones)
Stones: Mannish Boy (Muddy Waters) (It's okay, sorta short of great)

Fountains of Wayne, Hit Me Baby One More Time, is a great call.

Would have liked to hear Dylan's Mohammad's Radio. Like Zevon's Knockin' on Heaven's Door.

    YD&OHS, etc

Is their version better than Travis' version?

of course, somewhere in this thread, there has to be a mention of Janis Joplin's "Me and Bobby McGee." I saw Kris Kristofferson last year, and when he sang it, he actually did a little speech thanking Janis. I remember this mainly because the little old lady sitting in front of me turned to her husband and said, "This 'Janis' must be his wife."
