I went to see Die Hard 4 over the weekend, and I loved it. It got me thinking whether John McLane is the best action movie character of all time. After some deliberation, I decided that he is No. 2 taking into account quality and longevity. Feel free to disagree with the order or my criteria for "action movie character," but here is the beginning of a list:

    1. James Bond
    2. John McLane
    3. Terminator
    4. Indiana Jones
    5. John Rambo
    6. Ripley (from Alien, etc.)

    It's McClane. Indy's a close second.

EDIT: Write-brained is correct; it's McClane.

  3. Actually, it's McClane

James Bond was pretty lame in the early years, but he has just persisted for so long I had to put him up top.

I forgot about Neo, that is a good addition.

I wasn't sure about the Star Wars characters, and I decided to leave them out of my deliberations.

But John McClane is legit, I will have to disagree with you there. Here's the Die Hard music video, by the way:

  5. Indy would be my No. 1.

John McClane's definitely a solid second.

I think Snake Plissken needs to be in the discussion.

  7. Nice.

Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon probably should be in the top 20.

Weird to see no Tom Cruise yet, considering action movies is just about all he makes.

Sorry. I just no longer can look past the fact that he's a batshit crazy Scientologist.

Sonny Chiba as ... well, anyone.
Toshiro Mifune in Yojimbo or Seven Samurai.
Bruce Lee -- high on quality, low on longevity.

What about Charlie Sheen in NAVY Seals?

  11. True. And try as I might, I can't really think off-hand of an adventure flick of his that I really liked.
