It seems like there are several of these in Chicago:

    The 1969 Cubs.
    The 1977 White Sox.
    The 1983 White Sox.
    The 1984 Cubs.

The '77 White Sox team is an odd one, because that team didn't even win its division, and was constituted mostly of one-year rentals. But people still love the "South Side Hitmen."

I'm sure there are others like this - teams that are more beloved in their cities or on their campuses than teams that accomplished more. I guess I've included division winners on the list, so that would seem to be the cut-off. Conference or league champions need not apply.

I think the best college team of my lifetime is the 1995 Huskers, but the 1983 team was close. It seems almost unimaginable that that team lost to Miami, even if Miami was playing a home game in the bowl.

Not a Nebraska fan, but the '95 team was very VERY good.

    1985 Blue Jays

2008-09 Brampton Battalion (CC: JR, HC)

2002 Miami Hurricanes (pass interference my fucking ass)
